vision emerge 2022

Vision Emerge, Solo Exhibition, HAKE, House Of Art, NSW.

In her latest body of work, Ash Holmes hones in on concepts of renewal — from the climate, her practice, and the strength of the people around her. Titled Vision Emerge, the exhibition opens on 28th May 2022 at the Northern Beaches’ newest gallery, HAKE House of Art.

Using her distinctive gestural abstract style, Holmes personally reflects and projects her emotions and experiences onto the paintings. A change from previous bodies of work that haven’t always echoed the artist’s state of mind.

Vision Emerge bridges the gap between Holmes’ perception and how the works look to the outside world or viewer. After years of reflecting on her practice, she is painting what she needs to see; the artworks offer refuge or reminders of strength and beauty in times of extreme weather patterns and vast unknowns in health.

SHADOW SILHOUETTE 2022

Shadow Silhouette, Solo Exhibition, At The Above, VIC.

In her first solo exhibition in Melbourne, Ash Holmes explores a new composition, veering off from landscape and nature into a personal territory. Using a vintage film light, the artist cast shadows onto her canvases of personal items — a perfume bottle or handmade clay vessels. From here, she paints over the negative space left by the silhouette, blocking out patches of work.

Titled Shadow Silhouette, within the series there are mystery and layers, capturing the sense of objects close to Holmes and the moving shadow beyond it, all within the artist’s distinctive abstract oeuvre. They are the result of a fresh environment — her oversized studio on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, a former warehouse with light streaming through the tall windows. Ones that cast shadow and reflective gaze over the canvases as the artist works.
